Beans and Blankets

Author: Wyatt Elliott, Strategic Project Coordinator

God’s sovereign provision for His children is part of His nature that is truly amazing. Jesus said some 2000 years ago, “I am the Bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst” (John 6:35). He said this the day after He miraculously fed 5000 hungry people, and those hearing these words were thinking of their physical needs yet Jesus wanted them to understand who He was in regards to their spiritual needs. Jesus used very real physical needs as the means to reveal spiritual needs in His hearers that day. This work that Christ began continues today.

A women’s group at a church that partners with Big World Project was led back last summer to sew and knit blankets for the children at one of the homes located in Kesh, India. Another group of volunteers packed the blankets in suitcases and paid for them to be delivered to 60 very gracious children. Some of the children wiped tears from their eyes as they accepted these blankets to keep them warm on a cool night. But more importantly, as their physical needs are met at this home, they hear God’s Word and they experience His grace through these simple acts of love.

In October, thanks to some of our generous supporters, we were able to plant a garden on the property at that same home. The girls there helped to clean the ground of weeds, work up the rows, plant seeds and seedlings, apply mulch and compost, install drip irrigation lines, and tote buckets of water to give the new plantings their first drink. By Christmas they were picking beans and lettuce, and they had squash for the New Year! The garden is now in full production and is supplying a wide array of fresh vegetables daily. The Bread of life again supplying physical needs with much deeper spiritual implications.

Won’t you consider partnering with Big World Project to help us transform lives? To help us share Christ’s love in a very practical way while creating the opportunity to meet spiritual needs? Something as simple as a blanket or as natural as a bean can be the means to reveal to a lost child the words of the Bread of life, “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out” (John 6:37).
